Intent:

At Newchurch St. Nicholas School, our Art curriculum inspires children to express themselves creatively, develop confidence, and discover the joy of making and exploring. Using the AccessArt curriculum, we provide rich, hands‑on experiences that encourage every child to think like an artist.

In Art, children learn to observe the world closely, experiment with a wide range of materials, and explore ideas in imaginative ways. They study the work of artists, craft makers, and designers from different times and cultures, helping them appreciate diverse perspectives and creative traditions.

We encourage children to talk about their artwork and the work of others, helping them develop language, self‑reflection, and the confidence to share their ideas. Through practicing skills, taking creative risks, and learning from mistakes, children build resilience and pride in their achievements.

Our aim is to nurture thoughtful, curious, and expressive young artists who value creativity and can use it to understand themselves, their community, and the wider world.

Implementation:

At Newchurch St. Nicholas School, we follow the AccessArt Primary Curriculum, which provides a rich, progressive, and carefully sequenced approach to teaching Art. Each unit is designed to help children build practical skills, creative confidence, and an understanding of the artistic process.

Our Art lessons are practical, exploratory, and child‑led. Children are encouraged to experiment, make choices, and develop their own ideas. Teachers model techniques and introduce new skills step by step, allowing every child to revisit, refine, and build upon what they have learned.

We ensure children work with a wide range of materials and processes, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and textiles. Across the school, children explore the work of artists, designers, and makers from different cultures, backgrounds, and time periods. This helps them make connections, appreciate diversity, and understand that art can be created and enjoyed in many different ways.

Sketchbooks are used to record ideas, practise techniques, and reflect on progress. Children learn that art is a journey, one that involves curiosity, problem‑solving, taking risks, and learning from mistakes. Teachers provide encouragement and constructive feedback, helping children speak confidently about their work and the work of others.

Through consistent teaching, high‑quality resources, and a supportive environment, we ensure that all children develop as imaginative, skilled, and reflective young artists. Our implementation is designed so that every child experiences success, enjoyment, and a growing sense of creative identity.

Impact:

At Newchurch St. Nicholas School, our Art curriculum helps children grow as confident, creative, and expressive individuals. Through the AccessArt approach, children develop strong practical skills and a positive attitude towards artistic exploration.

By the time they leave our school, children will have experienced a wide range of artistic techniques, materials, and processes. They will understand how to look closely, think creatively, and communicate ideas visually. Our children learn that art is not just about producing a final piece, it is about experimenting, reflecting, and finding enjoyment in the creative journey.

Children are encouraged to talk about their work and the work of others using appropriate vocabulary, showing that they can think carefully, give opinions respectfully, and celebrate different artistic styles. Their sketchbooks and finished pieces show clear progression in skill, imagination, and independence.

Most importantly, our aim is for every child to see themselves as an artist. We want them to take pride in their achievements, feel confident to take creative risks, and develop an appreciation for the many ways art can enrich their lives and their understanding of the world.
