Religious Education
Religious Education at Newchurch St. Nicholas C.E. Primary school aspires to enable every child to flourish and to live life in all its fullness.
The curriculum aims to educate for dignity and respect encouraging all to live well together. We teach a full, progressive curriculum that prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of life in a modern interconnected world. Christianity is central to our curriculum and our Christian values are embedded throughout all we do in school. Christianity is studied as a living and diverse faith and is focused on the teaching of Jesus and the Church. The curriculum also provides sequenced learning about a range of religions and worldwide views with the aim of fostering respect for others and their beliefs.
The SACRE units we follow are outlined in the documents below:
Curriculum 2025-2026
Intent:
At Newchurch St. Nicholas School, our Religious Education (RE) lessons help us learn about different religions, beliefs, and ways of seeing the world. We want everyone to understand and respect each other, no matter what they believe.
In RE, we explore our own ideas and values, as well as those of other people. We learn to listen, share, and ask questions so that we can understand each other better.
Our aim is to help all children become kind, thoughtful, and respectful members of our school and the wider world.
Implementation:
At Newchurch St. Nicholas School, we make sure our RE lessons cover all six of the major world religions and beliefs so everyone can learn in a fair and balanced way. We follow the guidance in our local SACRE syllabus, which helps us teach RE properly and meets the requirements set out for schools.
We learn about many religions and worldviews, such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Humanism. We teach each one in a way that makes sense for the age and understanding of the children in our school.
Our RE curriculum is carefully planned so that learning builds up year by year. This means children can use what they already know while learning new ideas. As they move through school, they revisit important beliefs, stories, celebrations, and ways of living, so their understanding grows stronger over time. We also explore big themes like who we are, how people are different, how people worship, and what different groups celebrate and value.
To make RE interesting and enjoyable, we use lots of different ways of learning. These include talking in groups, acting out stories, using pictures or videos, reading together, and having class discussions. When we can, we visit places of worship or invite visitors from different religions to come into school. We want children to feel confident asking questions, sharing their thoughts, and listening respectfully to others.
We also link RE to other subjects. This helps children see how religion fits into real life, different cultures, and important events in the world.
We make sure every child can join in and succeed in RE. We give extra support where needed, such as using pictures, easier texts, or adult help, so that everyone can take part and learn well. We look for chances to make learning even richer, such as meeting leaders from different faiths or taking part in activities with other schools and community groups. These experiences help children learn about real people, real beliefs, and real stories, which encourages kindness, understanding, and respect. We check children’s learning in lots of different ways, such as listening to their ideas, looking at their work, and seeing how well they can make links between different religions. This helps us plan the best lessons for them and make sure they are making good progress.
Impact
At Newchurch St. Nicholas School, our RE curriculum makes a real difference to our children, both in their learning and in the kind of people they are growing up to be. By the time they leave us, our children show:
⭐ Strong knowledge and understanding
They know about many different religions, beliefs, and traditions. They understand why people celebrate, worship, and live in different ways.
⭐ Respect and empathy
They treat everyone kindly and fairly, no matter what they believe. They value differences and help create a peaceful, friendly school community.
⭐ Good thinking and reflection skills
They can think carefully about what they learn and talk about how beliefs affect people’s lives. They reflect on their own ideas too, showing maturity and thoughtfulness.
⭐ Tolerance and open‑mindedness
They can listen to other people’s views, even when they are different from their own. They take part in discussions respectfully and understand that there are many ways to see the world.
⭐ Important life skills
Through RE, they develop skills they will use forever—such as communicating clearly, working well with others, thinking deeply, and understanding people with different experiences.
Through our Religious Education curriculum, we help our children grow into respectful, knowledgeable, and caring young people who can take their place in a diverse world. We create a learning environment where children enjoy discovering different cultures and religions, helping them to make a positive difference in their community and understand the wonderful variety of people in our world.
